Straight talk about bowed walls: what is “fixed?”
“Fixing” a bowed block foundation walls can mean two very different things. Which one you need is based the condition of the wall.
In most cases, “Fixed” means reinforcing the foundation wall to stop further bowing. Accomplished by installing Carbon Fiber Straps or Steal I-beams on the interior side of the wall, reinforcing stops further bowing. In most circumstances, Carbon Fiber Wall Repair systems work perfectly. And, the ultra-low profile of Carbon Fiber Straps – easily painted or covered when finishing the basement – are less intimidating to potential buyers. In some circumstance only Steal I-beams should be used, see our Carbon Compatibility Test PDF for more details.]
“Fixed” can mean Full Restoration i.e. replacing/repairing the foundation wall like new. Full Restoration is invasive. Requiring a full excavation of the outside of the wall, temporary supports for the house, and the use of a hydraulic jack systems to push the wall back into place, or demolition/rebuilding the wall. Full Restoration is expensive and technical. Making it a project beyond the scope of most Homeowner-DIY’ers. This level of “Fixed” is can be avoided by reinforcing bowing walls sooner than later.
Fixing (Reinforcing) your block foundation wall during the early stages of bowing will ensure you never have to fix (Restore) your block wall in the future.
What makes our system different? Part A. Framing Anchors
Millions of homes built before the 1990’s, were constructed before their local Building Code required the framing to be “attached” or bolted to the foundation. “Unattached” homes rely on gravity to keep the framed house in place on top of the foundation. To properly Reinforce a block foundation, it must become “attached.” Otherwise, the entire wall could tilt in, sliding out from under the framing plate. (Don’t reinforce the wall without attaching it to the framing!)
Therefore, our Carbon Fiber Straps terminate on the top and bottom using anchors that permanently connect the framing, foundation wall, and floor together. This feature also makes the Carbon Fiber Wall Repair Kit perfect for securing poured cement foundation walls that are tilting.
What makes our system different? Part B. Made by the best.
The company making our DIY Kit is a top provider of Epoxy, Carbon Fiber, and Kevlar concrete reinforcing and repair systems for Commercial Contractors all over the world. And, the only System maker with a Contractor Product that is ICC-ES* Certified. We believe this is extremely important. It shows the level of ongoing continuous improvement they have to their Systems and to each component of the System. It is what we look for when doing repairs on our own homes.
* ICC-ES – ICC Evaluation Service – is the testing division of The International Code Council (ICC), author of our building codes. ICC-ES tests products and installation methods to determine if they meet or exceed the Commercial and/or Residential Building Codes and Certifies them for International use by licensed Contractors.
